Watch a constipated dog try to poop and your heart breaks. The straining, the discomfort, the look they give you that says "help me."
For 28 years, I've told owners the same thing: "Add more fiber. Try canned pumpkin. Make sure they're drinking enough water."
And you know what? It works—for about 3-5 days. Then the constipation comes back.
I used to think that was normal. "Some dogs are just prone to constipation," I'd tell worried owners. "You'll need to manage it long-term with fiber."
I was wrong.
The Day Everything Changed
Two years ago, I was treating a 11-year-old shepherd named Bailey who'd been chronically constipated for 16 months. Despite maximum fiber supplementation, she still struggled to poop 3-4 times per week.
Her owner was desperate. "Isn't there anything else we can try? I hate seeing her suffer like this."
At that moment, I realized something: I'd been treating the symptom (hard stool) instead of the cause (why the stool was hard in the first place).
I started researching. What I discovered changed how I treat constipation entirely.
Bailey's owner tried the approach I recommended. Within 36 hours, Bailey had a normal bowel movement. Within two weeks, she was going daily—something that hadn't happened in over a year.
That was two years ago. Bailey hasn't been constipated since.

Don't get me wrong—fiber helps. It adds bulk to stool and helps it move through the intestines.
But here's what fiber DOESN'T do: it doesn't restore the bacterial ecosystem that creates normal bowel movements.
Your dog's colon contains specific bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These compounds do something crucial: they stimulate the muscular contractions that move stool out of the body.
When these bacteria decline (due to aging, medications, diet, stress), those contractions become weak and irregular. Stool sits in the colon too long, water gets reabsorbed, and it becomes hard and difficult to pass.
Fiber helps push the hard stool out, but it doesn't restore the bacteria that prevent stool from becoming hard in the first place.
💡 Why Senior Dogs Get Constipated
If your dog is over 7-8 years old and starting to have constipation issues, it's almost certainly bacterial decline. As dogs age, their gut bacteria populations shift—often losing the specific strains that support healthy bowel movements.
This is why constipation becomes more common in senior dogs, and why fiber alone rarely solves it long-term.
The Cure That Actually Works
Once I understood the bacterial connection, the solution became obvious: restore the bacteria that produce SCFAs and stimulate bowel movements.
But it's not as simple as giving any probiotic. Most pet store probiotics use generic strains that don't colonize properly in a dog's gut.
What works are specific canine strains combined with the prebiotic compounds that keep them alive and thriving.
"My 12-year-old lab was constipated 2-3 times per week despite daily pumpkin. After trying Dr. Rodriguez's recommendation, he started going every single day within a week. It's been 8 months and he hasn't been constipated once. This actually cured the problem instead of just managing symptoms."
What's in the Cure
🔬 The 3-Part Solution
- SCFA-Producing Bacteria: Strains that produce compounds stimulating bowel movements
- Prebiotic Support: Fiber that feeds these bacteria, ensuring they thrive
- Digestive Enzymes: Help break down food completely, reducing strain on the colon
The exact formula, dosing, and timeline are shown in the video →
And here's the part that makes it easy: it's bacon-flavored. Dogs think it's a treat, not medicine.
What to Expect (Timeline)
Based on treating hundreds of chronically constipated dogs:
First 24-36 hours: Dog has first normal bowel movement. Stool is softer, passes easily, minimal straining.
Days 2-5: Bowel movements become regular (once or twice daily). Dog seems more comfortable.
Week 2-3: Chronic constipation is completely resolved. Normal bowel function restored.
Long-term: Dogs who were constipated weekly or monthly go months without a single episode. The problem is actually cured.
"I'd been giving my dog fiber supplements for 2 years. She'd go for a few days, then get constipated again. After switching to this bacterial approach, she's been regular for 5 months straight. I finally stopped worrying about whether she's pooped today."
When to See a Vet vs. Use This Cure
This approach works for common chronic constipation: infrequent bowel movements, hard dry stools, recurring issues, senior dog constipation, medication-related constipation.
See a vet immediately if:
- Dog hasn't pooped in 3+ days
- Vomiting with constipation (possible obstruction)
- Abdominal pain or swelling
- Blood in stool or around anus
- Extreme lethargy or won't eat
For typical chronic constipation—especially in senior dogs—this bacterial restoration approach typically cures the problem permanently rather than just managing symptoms.

Because I spent almost 30 years treating constipation the wrong way. I helped manage symptoms but never actually cured the problem.
When I finally understood the bacterial connection, I felt like I'd been failing my patients. All those dogs who came back month after month with the same issue—I could have cured them if I'd known this earlier.
This isn't some experimental treatment. The science of gut bacteria and bowel function is well-established. I'm just applying it correctly now.
The video walks through everything: which bacterial strains cure constipation, how much to give based on your dog's weight, and the day-by-day timeline of what to expect.
